Wild Knights
The Wild Knights were an order of scouts who served Guthix, roaming the wild areas of Ashenfall. Their primary task was to act as guardians, protecting both the people of Ashenfall from the dangers of the wilderness and the wilderness itself from the encroachment of civilization. They were renowned for their ability to traverse treacherous terrain, and their hunting skills were said to be unmatched, even by the Garou.
Equipment
[edit | edit source]Most Wild Knights favored studded leather armour over traditional plate metal, valuing stealth and agility, which were essential for moving through the dense forests.[1] Their archers, in particular, were known for their specialized leather attire, which was designed with carefully laid folds to offer protection. A key part of their daily ritual was to maintain their armour, ensuring it always looked pristine. The archers' helms were crafted to focus their vision, eliminating all distractions so they could give their complete attention to a target.[2]
Known for being quick, silent, and lethal, the archers of the Wild Knights often worked alone. They would stalk their prey for days, whether it was a monster or a person, as dictated by the order's commands. Their motto was simple: to harm the wilds was to make yourself a target.[3]
When the Wild Knights were brought into the war against the Garou, their leather armour presented a new challenge due to its distinctive smell. The Garou's heightened sense of smell allowed them to track the knights from a distance. To counter this, the knights learned to use wind to their advantage, always walking against it to mask their scent. Wild mages would also use air spells to constantly change the breeze's direction, a tactic that became a key part of their training.[4]
Only one Wild Knight wielded an abyssal whip in vengeance against the demon for a fallen sibling. Despite her name being forgotten, there are still creatures hiding in the shadows, afraid that she may come back with her whip.[5]
Despite their hunting prowess and effectiveness against the Garou, the Wild Knights' studded leather armour had a critical vulnerability. After the war, an order of assassins known as the Glass Knives began to target them. These assassins exploited the gaps in the studded leather, using poisoned daggers to end the lives of many Wild Knights. The Glass Knives considered the knights' unique ways a greater threat than the dragons that had recently appeared in the realm.[6]
Notable food
[edit | edit source]The Wild Knights have created many types of food for hunting, travelling, and preparing to adventure and face challenging monsters.
- Dwellberry Crunchies: The Wild Knights were particularly fond of Dwellberry Crunchies, though they referred to them as “Dwellberry splats” because Olis, their inventor, wasn’t a particularly good chef.[7]
- Dwellberry Glazed Roast Flank: Another chef named Orik the Bear excelled in cooking a dwellberry-glazed roast flank. This led many Wild Knights to seek his expertise on recreating the dish.[8]
- Grilled Mushrooms: The Wild Knights are known to forage for the best mushrooms to grill while on their long hunts.[9]
- Fortifying Soup: Wild Knights would prepare fortifying soups before heading into the Bloodblight Swamp or when facing venomous monsters. The mushrooms in the soup would absorb some toxins from the Bloodblight Swamp]] while satiating their hunger during a long journey ahead.[10]
Notable followers
[edit | edit source]- Aidan: A Wild Knight who died while hunting a beast in a poisonous fog, sacrificing himself to save his brothers. After his death, his brothers bore his name in honour of his sacrifice. [11]
- Frode: A Wild Knight who was so skilled with a bow that he never returned from a hunt empty-handed. He would hunt before every gathering of the Wild Knights so they could feast. His arrows were marked with his symbol (an owl). One day, he didn't return, and his body was found in five separate locations across Brynmoor. His arrows were never found. [12]
- Kessel: An Amalgamated Wild Knight whose skin glowed like burning coals. She favored a bronze greatsword in battle and could channel her fiery nature through it, setting it ablaze. Her attack on a young garou prince helped trigger the war between humans and garou. [13]
- Meya: The Wild Knight mentioned in the Heartstrings quest who fell in love with an elven bard.
- Orik the Bear: A Wild Knight known for his cooking expertise, particularly his Dwellberry Glazed Roast Flank. [14]
- Olis: A Wild Knight who invented what are now called Dwellberry Crunchies, though he called them "Dwellberry splats" due to his poor cooking skills. [15]
- Ulv: A boy who was rescued by a Wild Knight after being beaten by bandits. The Wild Knight taught him to use a bow. Later, Ulv killed a wolf that attacked Bramblemead and fashioned its skull into a mask. He became a Wild Knight who partnered with a necromancer who had "a knack for bones." [16]
- Vemmeck: A Wild Knight commander who led a siege against a northern garou stronghold alongside Sir Lear. [17]
- An unnamed female Wild Knight who wielded an abyssal whip in vengeance against abyssal demons for a fallen sibling. [18]
- An unnamed female Wild Knight captain who took in abandoned Amalgamated children after Guthix left. [19]
Trivia
[edit | edit source]- The Wild Archer Cowl closely resembles the appearance of the Crux Eqal Knights. It is believed that their leader, Thaerisk, might have been inspired by the design.

The plates rest underneath leather coverings, with metal studs to hold them in place, giving the armour its name. Favoured by scouts and hunters for its combination of agility and defence."

They would break easily, but the archers made it part of their ritual to maintain them regularly. Each day, they would wake and tend to the leather, making their armour seem brand new with each morning."

Yet, there were always those who would risk their ire, wannabe despots and greedy fools yearning to plunder the realm."
- ↑ Journal entry of Studded Leather Body, RuneScape: Dragonwilds. "When they were brought into the war against the garou, the leather armour initially proved less popular. While durable and agile, leather has a strong and distinctive smell. The garou’s olfactory senses were much stronger than humans were prepared for. They were capable of tracking down the leathery smell over disturbingly long ranges. Wind magic helped to keep the scent away from them, but it wasn’t enough to eradicate it."

- ↑ Journal entry of Dwellberry Crunchies, RuneScape: Dragonwilds. "Dwellberries on Ashenfall are heartier than their mainland counterparts, and make for excellent ingredients. While the first few attempts resulted in terrible food poisoning — Guthix was a god, not a chef — the perfected recipe soon became a favourite once he mixed in mushrooms. This was because the mushrooms absorbed much of the toxins, making it much more palatable."
- ↑ Journal entry of Leaf-scented Page, RuneScape: Dragonwilds. "Aidan is the talkative kind. He turns solitude into a gaseous buildup that he belches upon each of us as an endless stream of words. Every thought, feeling, and tiny observation is unleashed upon the rest of us the moment we meet. But today, there is silence, and I find I miss the noise. Aidan died valiantly defending his brothers. A group of them went out in search of some beast---some foul, fetid creature in the poisonous fog. It's clear that they found it and that it led to his death. His brothers mourn him silently; they're alive because he isn't."
- ↑ Journal entry of Blightwood Longbow, RuneScape: Dragonwilds. "One Wild Knight, Frode, was so skilled with the bow that he never returned from a hunt empty-handed. His siblings among the Wild Knights would send him out hunting before every great gathering so that they might feast heartily upon his return. For years, this was their happiest tradition. Until the day he did not return. It is said that his body was found in five separate places, spread out across the forests of Brynmoor like some gruesome compass. His quiver was empty, yet none of his arrows -- marked as they were, with his symbol, an owl -- would ever be found."
- ↑ Journal entry of Bronze Greatsword, RuneScape: Dragonwilds. "The Wild Knight Kessel was unusual in her choice of weaponry. Where most of the order chose to wield bows, daggers, or swift blades, Kessel favoured a bronze greatsword. On the battlefield, she hefted it across her shoulders, never letting the hilt leave her grip. As one of the Amalgamated, Kessel's skin glowed like burning coals, her battle scars resembling faint reddish embers. She harnessed this heat, channelling it through her sword. Her magic set the blade ablaze, a sight that struck terror into the hearts of her enemies. With great arcs of red flame, she cleaved through enemy forces, incinerating them as she severed their limbs from their bodies. On one fateful day, she would use this technique against a force of garou hunters. The battle was long, hard, and brutal, and both sides faced great casualties. But it was when she sliced her blade across the young garou prince that war was inevitable."

He lived outside the village, cast out for his silence and strange ways. Ulv did not follow the polite nonsense of human society, nor did he seem to care for their troubles. The boy was happy just to survive and whittle small carvings of animals from fallen branches. He hunted silently, using the daggers to slay small prey such as rabbits and chickens. He ate what he needed and sold the excess at the markets for enough coin to purchase simple clothes and tools. When he was thirteen, he was beaten by bandits and left for dead. But a Wild Knight found him and brought him to safety. Recovering in the knight's home, Ulv would be taught how to use a bow, a skill he soon mastered. When a wolf attacked Bramblemead, this outcast slew it. Villagers thanked him for his bravery and asked him what he wanted as a reward. He refuted their offers and asked only for the wolf's skull in return. He fashioned it into a mask that he chose as a new face, one he wore away from the village that had spurned him."
- ↑ Journal entry of Iron Mace, RuneScape: Dragonwilds. "He joined the Wild Knight commander, Vemmeck, in their siege against a northern garou stronghold. With countless goblins at their side, their victory was almost assured. Yet a single druid's magic held the forces at bay until Sir Lear learned how ineffective his mace was against the scales of a dragon."

In his last moments, he tasked the Wild Knights to uphold their oaths, protecting both us from the wild and the wild from us, and then he left. The captain of the Knights took some of the abandoned children under her wing. Those whose parents were lost to our venom. It will be a hard life, but better than they'll have here."
